Decorating a Child’s Room on the Cheap

When I was pregnant with Ava I felt compelled to do something special for Nick so he didn’t feel his new sister was getting all the attention. We had gone to Disney that summer and all he had talked about thereafter was a Mickey Mouse themed bedroom. So in my wisdom (lack there of) I opened up the Disney catalogue and I went to town. I bought the bedding, lamp and cells. He was also a huge fan of Buzz Lightyear, so how could I pass up the Buzz Lightyear chair, shelving, pillows and umm… more cells and a rocket type chandeliers. I paid a stupid amount of money to decorate a room that would lose its appeal in 2 short years. I decided I would not be doing that again.

Last year my daughter was on a princess kick. Day in and day out she asked if I would make her a princess room. I was hesitant to oblige, because I already knew there is no equality when it comes to whine and appreciation. Finally, I relented. This time I decided I would rely on paint, craft store sales and imagination to decorate. Luckily for me it worked out.

When it was all said and done I spent less than $300.00 which is about a fourth of what I spent on my son’s now has-been room. Thank goodness, because I am sure next year she’ll be ready for a Bratz room(ugg) or something worse.

  1. Beautiful!

And yes, going the store/catalog route can be very costly. I always made up my own themes and it worked fine…well, actually we never really had themes, but decorating accents to a basic setting.

  2. Wow! You are so creative…I want to be you when I grow up! lol!! I love the pillow…very nice room. Great post!

  3. Thank you.

Listen to Shawna, moms. Stay away from the catalogs!
